TAPESTRIES UPDATE + love from the blogosphere...

It's disconcerting that powerful storytelling is sometimes motivated by injustice and abuse of resources (both natural and human). The recent documentary Greatest Silence (it's now available on HBO!) is one of many great examples of documentaries motivated by a deep social issue. Tapestries of Hope has had a similar path since the decision to tell the story of Betty Makoni and her fight against a system and an urban legend.

After what has been a pretty long haul, director Michealene Risley's travelogue and narrative of the human rights abuse in Zimbabwe (disclosure: I am producing the doc.) is in its final phase. A few recent milestones and shoutouts:

  • IndieGoGo announced that Tapestries was the first and only feature doc. to successfully raise 2 rounds of funding online. The idea that fans can not only want a movie to be made but go ahead and help make it is HUGE. Thanks to Danae and her team for helping us make it happen.
  • FAT BOX is the post-production partner for the film. huge thanks to them for their support and the film is currently in post.
  • The film has started attracting core audiences esp. within the blogger community. Recent heartfelt posts have been gratifying for the core team as a validation of the direction we're going in.
  • Women@Google recently invited Michealene to talk about the project.
  • and finally, if you are in the SF Bay area, don't miss a special fundraiser put together by Wente Vineyards on Saturday June 28 (TODAY!) for the film, where Front Porch , which has performed at sxsw among other places, will be performing jazz and some classical pieces and you can hear from the director of the film.
Stay tuned for more updates. would love to hear from you.
